Miriam grew up in a small settlement near the Etevert Forest. It was just a little too big to be called an outpost, but it was still small enough to be called podunk.
Miriam has an older brother (Brandon) and twin younger sisters (Haley and Sophie). Since her father was often on patrol in or around the Etevert, and her mother had her hands full with the twins, she and Brandon got a lot of leeway to run around and play with minimal supervision. Kids being what they are, playtime often turned into wrestling and other scuffles. Eventually some of the off-duty soldiers began teaching them real combat techniques; if the children were going to insist on fighting in front of them, the soldiers said, they might at least do it properly and maybe prove useful in an emergency someday.
It came to light pretty quickly that Miriam was not cut out to be a fighter. She was easily overpowered in unarmed fighting even though Brandon wasn’t that much bigger, and perilously slow with anything larger than a sickle. But she was quick and agile – and a pretty good aim with a thrown rock, as Brandon learned to his dismay one afternoon. They started her off with a crossbow, but that was a little heavy for her, so on her ninth birthday her parents gave her a shortbow – and she took to it like a bird to the sky.
By the time Miriam was tall enough to comfortably handle a longbow, she’d had years of practice and was old enough to join the garrison soldiers in their drills. The marshal hadn’t intended to offend her when he declared she was “pretty amazing for a girl”, but to this day that phrase will make her blood boil. It wasn’t any better when someone later asked if she was an elf in disguise, because she was too good to possibly be human.
While she did a few years on patrols, she got practice at switching rapidly from ranged to close-quarters combat. However, she will give Brandon the credit for actually teaching her the skill, by thinking it great fun to run up on her while she was target shooting, often yelling something like “Think fast!”.
