Epicus was born Eglath, and spent his youth as a trader for his tribe. One time he visited a foothills settlement when a gladiatorial troupe was touring in town. Eglath watched the competitive fighting and felt the excitement on several levels. When the day’s fights were done, he asked the troupe owner how one could join them. The owner, Charun, explained the ins and outs of life as a gladiator, and Eglath promptly spent his pocket money to hire a courier to deliver his trade goods back home to his tribe. He had found his calling.
Charun originally played up the “strange savage” angle; Eglath was encouraged to shout in Giant (which few spectators understood) and was most often armed with a greatclub. But as Eglath racked up the victories and became a fan favorite, Charun started bestowing perks to match. The first was a pseudonym worthy of the arena: Epicus. The second was a greataxe, that became his signature weapon.
Epicus soon developed another stylistic quirk, which the fans adored. While the fights were still technically to the death, Epicus would occasionally knock his foe unconscious and call for some other fighter to administer the death-blow – on the grounds that the fight had been too easy and his foe had not earned the right to die at his hand. He fought as a gladiator for five years before deciding to retire, and is now seeking the next level of challenge (and fame and fortune) as an adventurer. He fought his farewell matches in Eburneum, and is now on the lookout for worthy allies – though he may have to settle for a crew that can tolerate his immense ego.
